In 2016 a seven-year programme of upgrades and refurbishments to the eight boarding houses, or Socials, for Radley College was completed. The project has improved the boarding experience beyond measure creating a home for the boys rather than simple boarding provision.
Individual sleeping quarters for younger pupils are arranged within a larger room to promote a sense of community while providing privacy. Older boys have individual rooms with bespoke furniture to maximise storage space. Room sizes were increased to allow for sharing, and the buildings’ quirky character was exploited to create additional rooms and increase the use of the Socials for residential lettings. A large kitchen forms the communal and pastoral heart of each house alongside social and games rooms. A social hall doubles as a supervised study area for younger boys, while older boys’ rooms now have private study space.
An attractive and robust palette of hard-wearing finishes and furniture brings individuality and much needed character to the project.
